Malibu Creek Loop with Beginner Option

Malibu Creek Loop with Beginner Option Professional Review and Guide

"This 15.4-mile loop taxes the legs but rewards the eyes. Mile for mile, it is one of the most scenic tours in all of Southern California. Even the much shorter beginner option is bursting with eye candy. (Which also makes it great for families; bring the kids in your Burley trailer and you won’t be disappointed.) After spinning by the mesmerizing Rock Pool, the year-round Century Lake, and burned-out exterior set for the TV show M*A*S*H, you come to an intersection with Bulldog Road. Beginners will turn around here, but more experienced cyclists will take a left and ascend a fire road that’s often surrounded by surprisingly green grasses. That’s because Malibu Creek State Park seems to get more moisture than almost anywhere in the Santa Monica Mountains; there’s even a unique freshwater marsh next to Century Lake. It’s nice to know this, because you need to occupy your mind with something as you climb over a frustrating false summit on your way up to Castro Peak Road. An easy coast down to the intersection with Mesa Peak Road delivers you to a massive volcanic sandstone escarpment, where it’s mandatory to settle into a hollow for lunch with a view. A little more climbing brings you to a summit with excellent ocean views. Then comes a downhill that seems disproportionately short. But then, don’t they all."

Only tried the beginner loop option but it was a great way to test your technical skills plus the park is beautiful. I'll be going back here often.

Fantastic, strenuous ride. Bulldog trail grinds your legs, but rewards the eye. The summit is indeed an other planet, and so fun to ride. The way downhill from there is a thrill. It took me 2h15, 3L water, and one energy bar to complete the loop on a warm (75º) May afternoon, on my GT avalanche 2.0
