Mono Pass Trail

Mono Pass Trail Professional Review and Guide

"The trail to Mono Pass offers a remarkably easy entry into the starkly beautiful world of the High Sierra. Meadows, lakes, long-abandoned miners’ cabins, and panoramic views attract crowds of visitors. Hikers seeking solitude are advised to go elsewhere."

"Mono Pass was a major trade route across the Sierra between the Miwok people on the west side and the Piutes on the east. It was also the site of the Golden Crown Mine active in the early 1880s. Some of the structures built during that time are still standing. The setting is incomparable: a beautiful meadow at the eastern crest of the Sierra containing lakes of the most vivid blue ringed by the warm-red rocks of Mount Lewis and Mount Gibbs."

"The hike to Mono Pass is a destination hike. The walk is enjoyable and pleasantly easy, while the subalpine scenery surrounding Mono Pass and the Golden Crown and Ella Bloss mines is simply spectacular. The weathered orange timbers of the mining cabins, the red walls at the head of Bloody Canyon, and the large meadows create a landscape of vibrant colors."
