Detailed Trail Descriptions from Our Guidebooks

Peter Massey & Jeanne Wilson
"Cone Peak Trail starts on paved Nacimiento-Ferguson Road—a very scenic road in its own right—and heads north into a corridor through the Ventana Wilderness. The trail immediately begins to climb along an easygoing, graded dirt road. Although it is an easy trail in dry weather, the road can become very slick when wet and can wash out in places. The bulk of the trail follows along a wide shelf road with ample passing places. As you drive through the wilderness corridor, the trail passes a number of scenic overlooks that face across the valley to the Santa Lucia Range. Cone Peak comes in and out of view as you approach the closure gate at the trail’s end. Special Attractions: Hiking access into the Ventana Wilderness; Great views along a mild shelf road. This trail is graded dirt but suitable for a normal passenger vehicle. It usually has gentle grades, is fairly wide, and has very shallow water crossings (if any)." Read more
