The Quarry and Park Ridge Trails are on the east side of Morro Bay State Park under the shadow of Cerro Cabrillo, a 911-foot double-peaked ridge. The Quarry Trail skirts the southern flank of Cerro Cabrillo past the rubble piles of an abandoned quarry site used for road construction in 1959. The Park Ridge Trail is an old ram road that crosses the rolling grasslands.

About 1.5 miles up a gentle incline on a well maintained trail, there is a junction to the left that will ascend Cerro Cabrillo. From this point you will make a steep ascent over a solid trail that has loose granules at several locations. Caution for sure footedness is needed. The final stretch to the peak is through boulders. Poison oak is trimmed back to the top. You will have climbed over 900 feet in elevation. The view is a 360 degree panorama of the city of Morro Bay to the north, Chorro Valley to the east, the backbay, delta, and sandspit to the west with Los Osos and a distant view of Montana de Oro to the south. Spectacular. Today there were vast outbursts of wildflowers and the bushes in bloom. Spotted several lizards and a couple small snakes scurrying off the trail as I approached. From the peak I looked down on two eagles circling in search of prey. Only ran into one other person on the trail back.
