Lower Punchbowl Canyon

Lower Punchbowl Canyon Professional Review and Guide

"On this trip you enter Devil’s Punchbowl by a little-known back way—the mouth of Punchbowl Canyon. Once above the lower canyon portals, you’ll find yourself in a maze-like wonderland reminiscent of the “slickrock” country of southern Utah, save for the reddish hues. The hike is best done in the winter or early spring, when snowmelt or runoff courses down the canyon and its tributaries.

Soon the familiar Punchbowl Formation rocks are all around you. The slabs of pebbly sandstone rise dramatically to the south--if you're game for it, scramble up for a great view of the brooding San Gabriels. Caution is in order when the rock is wet; it tends to disintegrate grain by grain much as Utah's slickrock does."
