Griffith Park to Mount Hollywood

Griffith Park to Mount Hollywood Professional Review and Guide

"This delightful course is ideal for newcomers to trail running in Los Angeles. The wide, smooth fire roads are popular with walkers, runners, and equestrians. There are several water stops and rest areas under shady trees. Those who do not want to go the entire distance can explore the Griffith Park Observatory before returning to the start. The landscape is scenic, the city views superb, and you will catch glimpses of the Hollywood sign on the mountain to the west. Parking is free."

The trail in general is really nice, if you can find it and stay on it! This was my first hike in Griffith and I was surprised by the lack of signs. But the hike was fun and there were great views. I would suggest picking up a park map though.

The trail up to Mount Hollywood from the observatory was closed, possibly because of the recent fire. I was running the trail, so I just took a detour down the road on the mountain. Great course for running!

Now that the Observatory is open there are no closures. Great hiking/running trail. During the week it's even better with less people, but even on the weekends it's not that crowded.

This trail is marred by road closures due to the renovation of Griffith Park Observatory. If you park at the bottom and walk up, you can't get around the closures to connect with the Mount Hollywood Trail. We had to walk back down and get our car and drive up the paved road to the west side, then continue hiking. There was a sign warning of the closures, but also that there was still access to the upper trail. We saw no signs up top indicating where to pick up the trail (they could use more signs at all the junctures). About a dozen people were just below the observatory trying to figure it out. If anyone knows the way or a marker that more than a dozen people missed, please post becasue the trail is quite enjoyable once you find it!
