An out-and-back hike into the Old West. The Mulkey Pass Trail is a short route to the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), but is not much used by hikers because the trailhead is not marked and the footing is sandy and deep. Ranchers use the trail to drive cattle to and from the cow camp and beyond to other summer grazing allotments in the wilderness, so it is pretty thoroughly trampled and indistinct. Still, it’s a chance to glimpse a traditional way of life rapidly disappearing from the West.
