A loop hike with optional variations to 11,510-foot Kern Peak for views of the Southern Sierra and high desert unsurpassed anywhere in the Golden Trout Wilderness. This is the easiest route to Kern Peak by trail, though the route gets little maintenance beyond Tunnel Meadow and in a few places is indistinct or altogether absent. You should be fairly competent at reading your topo map. The hike is described here as a loop—which makes the approach to the peak a bit easier to follow and provides some variety—but you can start in either direction, and descend the same way you came up.
