Chicken Spring Lake

Chicken Spring Lake Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"An out-and-back weekend backpack or a vigorous day hike to a true High Sierra glacial cirque lake. This outing involves lots of altitude gain in a short distance. If you’re not already acclimatized to high elevations, you are likely to suffer symptoms of altitude sickness if you take this one too fast."

Great overnight trip. Lots of good camping spots at the lake. Views from the pass are amazing. The climb up the the switchbacks is around 1000 feet. The switch backs make it possible for most to climb such a great distance up, but it was still hard. The trail is maintained well. The ranger did check my permit so get yours.

Very nice day hike! Great tune up hike to get ready for Mt. Whitney. Because of the High Altitude I recommend you acclimate at the campgrounds at the trail head.

This is a good overnighter to gain experience with altitude. Very cold in September. Beautiful scenery.

Nice hike. Nice campsites on the lake. Scramble up to the top of Cirque Peak (12,900') for great views of Mt. Langley to the north.
