A perfect weekend backpack or a convenient base camp at the hub of several routes to more remote Kern Plateau destinations. Big Whitney Meadow is laced with clear creeks teeming with golden trout and liberally sprinkled with wildflowers most of the season.

This is a nice hike but the range cattle have distorted the trail and might lead you off track. Keep an eye on your map or GPS or you will end up off the trail. You can follow this down into the Golden Trout creek and end up in Little Whitney. If you do not want to back track you can return through Tunnel Meadow and back over Trail Pass at the base of Mulkey Meadow. If you would like to do a through hike you can catch the trail at the former Tunnel Meadow station and head South toward Ramshaw and follow it down into Monache Meadow where you can be picked up.
