Lyell Canyon is one of Yosemite’s backcountry treasures that can be enjoyed on a not-too-arduous day hike. There are two particular highlights on this quite flat trek through lodgepole pine forest and across many small meadows. The first is the pair of bridges across the Lyell Fork of the Tuolumne River, for beneath the bridges is some exquisite water-carved rock. The second is the last mile of this walk, when you are in Lyell Canyon proper, a 6-mile-long classically U-shaped glacial canyon, through which flows the deep and meandering Lyell Fork of the Tuolumne River.
