High Sierra Camps Loop, Southeast Section

High Sierra Camps Loop, Southeast Section Professional Review and Guide

"The High Sierra Camps Loop hike is very popular, not surprisingly, because the five backcountry camps are spaced 6–10 miles apart, distances that are about right for most backpackers. If you can get reservations to stay at these camps (see “Camping and Lodging,” page 20), then your food and bedding will be provided, which allows you to hike with a light pack.

In reality, your chances of getting reservations are poor (and the camps are expensive), so most people settle for staying in the backpackers’ camps adjacent to each site."

"The High Sierra Camps Loop is very popular, since the 5 backcountry camps are spaced about 6 to 10 miles apart, ideal for most backpackers. The loop is broken into two parts because most hikers don’t have six days free, and by being out fewer days, you will have a lighter pack. On your first day, when your pack is heaviest and you are perhaps are not in the best of shape, you have the shortest distance to hike, just 5.8 miles to Sunrise High Sierra Camp."
