As you approach Conway Summit from Bridgeport, the twin summits of Dunderberg Peak are prominent from Highway 395. The peak offers numerous descent opportunities on all sides; the best are the two to the northeast and two to the southeast, described here. This is a superb midwinter trip of moderate difficulty—an excellent introduction to overnight winter ski camping, as the ski into base camp follows the easy grade of Virginia Lakes Road. Besides Dunderberg Peak, the area provides fine ski descents from Excelsior Mountain and Black Mountain.
