Schulman Grove Trail Professional Review and Guide
"The oldest living things in the world grow on this trail. Bristlecone pines (Pinus longaeva) are a hardy and otherworldly species. They grow throughout the West, but none grow as old as the trees on this trail and its environs. The area’s harsh soil and climate are what allow these trees to become so robust. The environment is brutal, but bristlecone pines are specifically adapted to such extremes. Insects, disease, and fire do not harm the trees, due to their sinewy and resinous wood. When a part of the tree dies, other parts continue to grow. The more bent, twisted, and gnarled the tree, the older it is."
