Whitney Butte Trail Professional Reviews and Guides

"Hike through an open landscape past chunks of recently extruded dark lava to the top of a small volcano, where you’ll have sweeping views of Mount Shasta, Lava Beds National Monument, and other volcanic landforms of far northeastern California. Start the adventure by exploring the dark and frigid recesses of Merrill Ice Cave."

"The trail starts at the Merrill Ice Cave and skirts Whitney Butte en route to the Callahan Lava Flow. The lava flow is a jagged wasteland of jumbled and twisted black rock, stretching off to the southern horizon. Stark landscapes and harsh high-desert beauty await the well-prepared hiker who carries plenty of water and adequate sun protection. Terrain: Dirt path, Volcanic highlands and sagebrush steppe."

Nice hike--fairly easy if you go early or late to avoid heat. There were of wild flowers in early July and I saw no one else on the trail. The end of the hike is a little confusing--there is a chain blocking the trail which I assume is the top of the Butte/end identified in the guide.
