    Potrero Seco Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This trail sees a maximum of 10 vehicles a day, so your chances of meeting other travelers are slim. The trail is in good condition with a fairly smooth surface. The 3-rating is mainly for some moderately steep sections and the forest service’s requirement for 4WD vehicles. The trail leaves California 33 and immediately enters the permit area through a gate. The first couple of miles are roughly graded because they access private property. The trail then runs along the boundary of two separate wilderness areas, the Dick Smith Wilderness to the north and the Matilija Wilderness to the east. Hiking trails access both wilderness areas. Special Attractions: Lightly traveled, permit-only trail within Los Padres National Forest; Trail travels around the edge of Dick Smith Wilderness and Matilija Wilderness; Beautiful, winding ridge top trail. High-clearance 4WDs are preferred, but any high-clearance vehicle is acceptable. Expect a rough road surface; mud and sand are possible but will be easily passable. You may encounter rocks up to 6 inches in diameter, a loose road surface, and shelf roads, though these will be wide enough for passing or will have adequate pull-offs."

While it was a very beautiful trail... it wasn't very tough at all. I expected to have to use my 4 wheel drive but a car could have made it easily. The recent fires in the area burned everything along the trail and made the fire department bulldoze the trail so it was very flat and easy driving.
