Upper Hot Spring Canyon to Hot Spring Falls

Upper Hot Spring Canyon to Hot Spring Falls Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The 25-foot waterfall in Hot Spring Canyon sits in a multi-colored rock grotto with ferns and moss-covered walls. The waterfall cascades over two tiers into pools. The trail to the falls begins from the Falcon Campground along the North Main Divide Road on the southeast flank of Los Pinos Peak.

The informal path stays close to the creek as it descends through Hot Spring Canyon, crossing the creekbed several times."

Detailed Trail Descriptions from Our Guidebooks

"Canyons penetrated by roads sometimes hold on to that wild feeling; those crossed only by trail are wilder still. And canyons with neither road nor trail perturbing their tranquility are the wildest canyons of all. Upper Hot Spring Canyon, lacking roads and (formal) trails, definitely falls into the wildest canyon category, particularly in light of its location—within the boundaries of Orange County. The canyon is one of those places way off hikers’ radar because it in no way lives up to the promise of its name (no soothing hot springs are to be found) and has no trail. At least no developed trail. A faint, but passable use trail will lead those hikers willing to do a bit of rock-hopping, creek crossing and bushwhacking to some pools and a small waterfall."

"Silent, except for the gentle gurgle of water over stone, upper Hot Spring Canyon is an easy-to-reach retreat not far from the popular campgrounds in the Potrero Los Pinos area. Boulder-hopping and mild bushwhacking take you to an interesting area of small waterfalls and dark, limpid pools."

The Guide stops at the first falls. There is a bigger one further on that would require full climbing gear to get to the bottom.

There's really not much of a trail there, lots of bushwhacking. The trail goes from following the creekbed to being in it, and there are some places that I don't see how you could get through if the stream was actually flowing. In order to see the falls you'll definitely have to go in early spring. And there were lots of bugs due to the stagnant water.
