Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"This brief hike scrambles to the flat summit of an unusual volcanic mesa above Lake Alpine for a bird’s-eye view over the upper Stanislaus River drainage. Ascending through a red fir forest and across a dry meadow, we arrive at a volcanic ridge framed on either side by flat-topped, volcanic rock formations, deeply fluted on the sides. Gazing south from this saddle, we can see for miles over the low-lying basin of the Stanislaus River’s north fork, where the Utica and Union reservoirs stand out bright blue against the darker green forest. The trail continues to the left (east), scrambling up to a rocky contour on the mesa’s north side, enjoying wide-open views over Lake Alpine toward Mount Reba (8, 755 feet)."
