Stairstep Falls Trail

Stairstep Falls Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This scenic walk is great anytime of year, but it is especially beautiful in late fall and winter, when big-leaf maple leaves turn the forest into a tapestry of red and gold, salmon spawn in the creek, and Stairstep Falls gushes with water."

"Swathed in dense riparian foliage, Stairstep Falls descends past a small viewing area to feed Devil’s Gulch and Lagunitas Creek. Stairstep Falls is tucked away in an overgrown crevice in a fabulous state park. Reaching the hidden falls involves a steady, easy climb broken by long, gentle traverses. The falls are on a side stream feeding Devil’s Gulch, which flows peacefully to its confluence with Lagunitas Creek, an environmental success story in that, after many years, it finally welcomes coho salmon back to spawn in winter. The Stairstep Falls Trail is one of the easiest and most pleasant in Samuel P. Taylor State Park, which also hosts stands of redwoods, a scenic and popular campground, and a trail system that includes the paved Cross Marin Trail." Read more
