Samuel P. Taylor State Park: To the Top of Barnabe Peak Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Starting off by Devils Gulch Creek, Bill’s Trail gently ascends to the top of Barnabe Peak and past a 30-foot waterfall. At the peak’s lookout, the 360-degree view takes in Tomales Bay, the Pacific Ocean, the towns of San Geronimo and Lagunitas, and isolated Kent Lake and Peters Dam in the Marin County watershed. The fire roads on the way down allow you to enjoy those vistas a while longer. Trails Surface: Paved fire road for 0.1 mile to single-track dirt trail up the mountain at about a 5 percent grade. Return on dirt fire roads through grasslands."

"Starting off in redwoods on a flat trail, you ascend steadily to the top of Barnabe Peak, with its 360-degree view taking in Tomales Bay to the Pacific Ocean, the towns of San Geronimo and Lagunitas, and isolated Kent Lake and Peters Dam in the Marin watershed. Then it’s downhill on grasslands back into the woods." Read more

"From an ease-of-hiking standpoint, this 6.5-mile Barnabe Peak loop is close to perfect— like taking the escalator up and the elevator down. An easily graded path starts along a creek where salmon spawn some winters, makes a short detour to a waterfall, then ascends through wooded canyons to the high, grassy slopes of Barnabe Peak. From a viewpoint with sweeping vistas of Point Reyes, Mount Tamalpais, and Bolinas Ridge, you’ll return downhill on a moderately steep fire road through grassland back into woods." Read more
