Cleghorn Bar OHV Campground Drive to Middle Fork Feather River Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A thrilling and scenic descent to the Middle Fork of the Feather River. Great camping and fishing especially in the fall. A designated “Wild & Scenic” area. Similar to Stag Point Trail #8 except rougher, steeper and narrower towards the bottom. One tight switchback has been chewed up from uphill tire spinning. Stock 4WD SUVs with low-range gearing can make it when trail is dry. Not for novice drivers. Avoid when wet. Best time late spring through fall. Take insect repellent."

We were in a group of 5 OHV's including a stock Jeep Liberty several stock Jeep Wranglers and a highly modified Jeep Wrangler. Most of the trail was a senic ride on easy roads. The yellow wild flowers at the higher elevations were spectacular. The view from one narrow ridge was steep canyons on both sides of the trail. The decent down the face of one canyon side was a seriuos drop, fairly steep with switchbacks and serious washout on the trail. There were a number of times that we were concerned that we would have some diffculty getting back out. But, the climb out was not as difficult as we expected. Keeping up the momentum with open differencial vehicles was the key. Believe it or not, the Jeep Liberty did the best, but there was actually very little problem getting out. The campground is right on the river. primitive by pleasant. The river is deep and wide. Great fishing/swimming hole, with a small falls. Watch for smakes. They are in the cooler covered areas. No big deal. Don't miss this trail. It is the only access the the protected area of the river. You will remember this one for years to come. Except for the lack of restroom facilities, the wives will enjoy it as well.
