Sam McDonald County Park Trails Professional Review and Guide
"This 1003-acre San Mateo County park lies on both sides of meandering Pescadero Road near La Honda. The 400 northeast-facing acres that drain into Alpine Creek are mostly redwood forest with understories of huckleberry, cream- bush, and hazelnut and a lush ground cover of redwood sorrel. On the southeast side of Pescadero Road are the sunnier grasslands and oak/madrone woods on south-facing Towne Ridge. On the north side of this ridge lies the 38-acre Heritage Grove on the banks of Alpine Creek. Here are specimen old-growth redwoods and a fine second-growth redwood/fir forest preserved following a citizens fund drive that culminated in the County ’s acquisition of the grove. Parklands stretch from the grove west to Pescadero and La Honda roads. This trail guide includes the following trails: Two Loop Trails North from Park Office, Big Tree Trail South from Park Office, Heritage Grove Loop."
