    Mount Williamson Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Mount Williamson is the northern complement to Mount Islip. In many regards the two hikes are almost identical. The distance, elevation gain, and even summit elevation are virtually the same. One peak is on the south side of the Angeles Crest, and the other on the north. Truly, these twin trails seemingly lead to twin peaks. Statistics and data are where the comparison begins, but these are also where it ends. Williamson and Islip are about as different as two mountains in the same area can be."

A great 7.74 mile dog-friendly hike into a geological wonderland called Devil’s Punchbowl out to the Devil’s Chair, right on top of the San Andreas Fault. Located where the Mojave Desert meets the Angeles National Forest, the rock formations and landscape are amazing, and if you pick up the visitor’s guide at the visitor’s center or research it in advance, quite educational! (Date hiked: April 9, 2011.) Read the full write-up at: www.greeneadventures.com/2011/04/19/devils-chair-in-devils-punchbowl-straddling-the-san-andreas-fault/

Jerry Schad and David Money Harris
"Mount Williamson is not as tall as its brethren on the opposite side of the Angeles Crest Highway, but it is nevertheless one of the most prominent and noteworthy because of its commanding position overlooking the Mojave Desert. This popular hike via the Pacific Crest Trail offers excellent views from the trail and summit." Read more

"Mount Williamson isn’t the highest peak on the San Gabriels’ crest, but it hovers more closely over the desert than Mounts Islip, Hawkins, BadenPowell, and others south of Angeles Crest Highway." Read more

    Casey Schreiner
"This lightly traveled, two-summit trek features a beautiful route to the first peak and a fun, rustic trail to the second. Along the way you’ll have probably the best views you’ll ever get of San Gabriel Canyon, as well as a good perspective on the San Andreas Fault and the chance to extend your hike along a rugged summit ridge."
