Mount Baden-Powell Trail

Mount Baden-Powell Trail Professional Review and Guide

"This is Angeles National Forest high country, above the smog, and nearly above everything else in Southern California. You’ll start this trek at Dawson Saddle, which is the high point on the roadway topping out at 7900 feet. There are a couple of trailheads here, but both meet up at the top of the ridge a short distance in front of you. One is newer and the other is more obscure and thus harder to find. If you are not used to elevation, you might feel its effects as you tromp directly upwards from the outset of the hike."

"Mount Baden-Powell, at 9,399 feet, is the second tallest mountain in the San Gabriel range after Baldy and its subsidiary summits."

"This high-elevation day hike leads to a windswept, subalpine summit in the northern reaches of the Sheep Mountain Wilderness, where far-ranging vistas unfold. At 7,903 feet, Dawson Saddle provides the second-highest trailhead in the San Gabriel Mountains, affording easy access to the high country. A trail was constructed in the early 1980s that bypasses the old path going over 9,138-foot Throop Peak. This new trail joins the Pacific Crest Trail on the crest of the range and makes the ascent to Mount Baden-Powell much easier and yet less popular than the traditional route starting at Vincent Gap."
