Supreme views of Lake Tahoe from the Martis Peak lookout are the chief goal of this trip. For less committed hikers, a viewpoint 1.5 miles from the trailhead offers a fine vista of the lake, although it’s not nearly as impressive as the view from the lookout. The majority of the route is along a mostly forested section of the Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT), but the last three-quarter of a mile to the lookout shares the course with the paved Martis Peak Road, a byway passable to the average sedan.

We stayed at our favorite place in Kings Beach and after some waffles on a chilly Monday morning, we jumped in the Rover in search of some off road. Martis Peak was a local recommendation as the logging roads jut off in all directions once you have turned up the road to the peak. About a half mile from the fire tower the gate was locked, we hiked up to the lookout. There is a chilly wind a blowing this time of year.. Great view abound and probably worth a trip back to explore the terrain with the 4x4.
