Indian Nature Trail Professional Review and Guide
"Clear Lake stretches 19 miles along Big Valley and is eight miles wide. The enormous lake reached its present size from a massive landslide thousands of years ago, blocking the valley’s natural westward drainage to the Russian River. As the lake rose, Cache Creek began draining the lake eastward into the Sacramento River. The productive lake has large populations of fish, and the broad basin is abundant with wildlife, which first attracted human habitation over 12,000 years ago."
