William Heise County Park Trail

William Heise County Park Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"At Heise Park you can find the quintessential walk in pine woods. The park is located in one of the most beautiful and unspoiled pockets of undeveloped land around Julian, and is just large enough to contain a significant network of footpaths. The 2003 Cedar Fire swept through the park, just as it did over much of the Cuyamaca Mountains to the south, but the pine and oak forest is well into recovery mode by now. Incense cedar grew in fair abundance before the fire, and it is not certain how quickly or vigorously it will return—if at all. About one-tenth of the park is devoted to meticulously maintained camping and picnic areas. The surrounding area is a virtual wilderness laced with about 7 miles of mostly looping trails."

"The variety of landscape and difficulty of this combined-trails loop makes this hike a lot like a planned gym workout. You begin in a scenic forest with a moderate climb, wind your way through a rugged, strenuous portion with panoramic views, and end with an easy cool-down through lush foliage."

"Well into spring, the thermometer may be dipping into the chilly 40s and 50s by day. You’re likely to have the trail to yourself. Dress in layers to stay warm—or cool (temps in summer months sometimes reach the 90s). Make sure you have plenty of water and snacks. The continuous climb on this high-elevation trail can be tiring."

It would have been better if it was longer! It only take about 25 minutes to go up and back down. They have some beautiful homes in the area and the views from the top are great!

Hell Hole is a great hiking spot for hikers of all skill levels in the winter and spring - in the summer the heat and sun can be brutal and only experienced hikers with water packs should attempt a full hike. This trail is an excellent desert hike, and the area is recovering well from the fires. It is of note that the actual trail listed here is not completely open at this time. However, it does appear that the trail closures are for trail maintenance! The trail that is currently open is about 1 mile shorter but just recently renovated and in beautiful condition. As of this date the park is only open Friday thru Monday - and the park is always closed in August due to the heat.
