At Heise Park you can find the quintessential walk in pine woods. The park is located in one of the most beautiful and unspoiled pockets of undeveloped land around Julian, and is just large enough to contain a significant network of footpaths. The 2003 Cedar Fire swept through the park, just as it did over much of the Cuyamaca Mountains to the south, but the pine and oak forest is well into recovery mode by now. Incense cedar grew in fair abundance before the fire, and it is not certain how quickly or vigorously it will return—if at all. About one-tenth of the park is devoted to meticulously maintained camping and picnic areas. The surrounding area is a virtual wilderness laced with about 7 miles of mostly looping trails.
