Well into spring, the thermometer may be dipping into the chilly 40s and 50s by day. You’re likely to have the trail to yourself. Dress in layers to stay warm—or cool (temps in summer months sometimes reach the 90s). Make sure you have plenty of water and snacks. The continuous climb on this high-elevation trail can be tiring.

Hell Hole is a great hiking spot for hikers of all skill levels in the winter and spring - in the summer the heat and sun can be brutal and only experienced hikers with water packs should attempt a full hike. This trail is an excellent desert hike, and the area is recovering well from the fires. It is of note that the actual trail listed here is not completely open at this time. However, it does appear that the trail closures are for trail maintenance! The trail that is currently open is about 1 mile shorter but just recently renovated and in beautiful condition. As of this date the park is only open Friday thru Monday - and the park is always closed in August due to the heat.
