Afoot & Afield: San Diego County

This is a great trip for a cool fall day. You'll see views down into the pastoral valleys around Julian and if you are lucky the oaks will be showing off their fall color (yellow). The top is exposed and can be cool and very windy, but you may catch a sight of a hang glider riding the warm updrafts from the desert. This is one of the easiest hikes where you can get a view of the mountains and the desert at the same time. Make a day of it by finishing with wine tasting or apple pie in Julian. There is also a wonderful barbecue restaurant there!
