Narrows Earth Trail Professional Review and Guide
"Stop by the Narrows Earth Trail for what is not necessarily a simple lesson in geology. Most of the northern Vallecito Mountains consist of granitic rock uplifted fairly recently in a geologic sense. Detachment faulting—the slumping of large blocks of landscape due to tensional forces—is also suspected. Here, in an area heavily fractured by faulting, it is possible to view some very old meta-sedimentary rock in close proximity to much younger granitic rock. The metamorphosed layers of sand and mud represent the most ancient (roughly 500 million years old) kind of rock exposed in the Anza-Borrego Desert."
