This hike will put you within easy reach of ancient fossil shell reefs so dense that fossils and fossil fragments outweigh the very matrix in which they lie. You can combine this walk with a stroll through Split Mountain if road conditions block passage to your automobile through the Split itself. This would add an additional 5 miles round trip.
