Foot and Walker Pass

Julian, California

Foot and Walker Pass Professional Review and Guide

"This short trail provides an excellent orientation to the Blair Valley region, with its layers of human use, from prehistoric (pictographs and morteros) to historic (pioneer routes through Box Canyon and Foot and Walker Pass) to recent (the Marshal South home on Ghost Mountain) times. Here, where its route went past the entrance to the valley, the Butterfield Overland Stage had difficulty with the pass, especially if the coach had a heavy load. Often passengers had to hop out and walk––hence the name of the pass."

This is an excellent wildcamp spot if you're doing the San Diego Sea to Sea Trail. It's also handy to cache water here if you're thru-hiking, as you can easily drive in off the S-2 beforehand(don't need 4-wheel-drive). And if you've a bit of time, the surrounding short hikes give good views over the very arid but once lake beds. Just to the north of the Valley (below your camp spot), is the Butterfield Pass, with a commemorative stone sentinel - you pass over it to follow the Sea to Sea Trail north (into Shelter Valley). Hard to imagine travelers used to help push the wagons over here! When we camped, a very tame she-coyote stole food one of us had left hidden in some rocks overnight - keep it in your tent! But great value watching her curled up a few feet from us watching our breakfast and packing up antics!
