Burro Schmidt Tunnel Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The trail leaves California 14 and bears southwest across the wide Indian Wells Valley. It gradually rises along a steady grade toward the El Paso Mountains. At the base of the mountains are the remains of the old Holly Ash Cleanser Mine. A tank and several mining relics surround huge white caverns hollowed into the cliff. The trail enters the El Paso Mountains, passing the sturdy wooden building of the Bonanza Gulch post office before descending into Bonanza Canyon. The trail crosses Last Chance Canyon Trail, immediately southwest of Bickel Camp. If you do not intend to travel the full length of Last Chance Canyon Trail, it is worth the short detour to see the cabin and open-air museum at Bickel Camp. Special Attractions: Remains of the Holly Ash Cleanser Mine and Bonanza Gulch post office; Trail intersects with other 4WD, ATV, and motorbike trails in the El Paso Mountains; Burro Schmidt Tunnel and cabin. High-clearance vehicles are preferred, but not necessary. This trail is dirt roads, but may have rocks, grades, water crossings, or ruts that make clearance a concern in a normal passenger vehicle. The trail is fairly wide, so that passing is possible at almost any point along the trail. Mud is not a concern under normal weather conditions."

Burro Schmidt Tunnel is a monument to perseverence. Walking almost 1/2 mile through a hand-dug tunnel might be claustrophobic to some people, an adventurous rush to others. I'm the latter. It's too bad that people have vandalized his nearby cabin. While in the area, visit nearby Bickel Camp (preserved by the The Friends Of Last Chance Canyon for a well preserved look into the local mining history - and ingenuity.
