The majority of the Fort Ross State Historic Park lies east of Highway 1. The undeveloped uplands rise over 1,500 feet to the coastal ridge. Old logging roads wind through the dense conifer forest with second-growth coastal redwoods and timbered meadows. This hike weaves through the deep forest, meadows, and open grassland along the San Andreas Rift Zone to an overlook of the ocean above Windermere Point. Along the way are closeup views of fault trenches and sag ponds, formed from sinking ground along the fault zone.
