Just off the freeway, the bouldered recesses of the Jacumba Mountains Wilderness Area beckon hikers skilled in navigation techniques. Follow these directions, and in just a few minutes you can be on your way into a primeval landscape visited only by an occasional adventurer like yourself. (To be honest, though, there has been a good deal of illegal migratory traffic through this general area, especially in recent years.) You don’t have to limit yourself to the specific route described here, of course, as the entire area is perfect for off-trail scrambling and exploration.
