Black Star Canyon Adventure

Black Star Canyon Adventure Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Black Star Canyon Adventure is, as the name implies, an adventurous 16.65mile mountain bike ride in the Santa Ana Mountains of northeastern Orange County. The net elevation gain of the out-and-back ride is 2,004 feet, in 8 miles. The return trip features a rapid descent. Black Star Canyon has a rich history and folklore; the canyon and surrounding lands have multiple layers of preservation, including the Irvine Ranch National Natural Landmarks, Cleveland National Forest, the Wildlands Conservancy (through the Mariposa Reserve), and some private land ownership.

Artifacts from the era of the ancient Tongva-Gabrielino peoples have been found in the canyon. Mining operations in the canyon area started during the early 19th century, and continued well into the 20th before ceasing. Some old mining equipment, infrastructure, and shafts can still be seen."

"This hike follows an old dirt road as it zigzags up the canyon through public and private land. (The road is a vehicle-restricted public right-of-way.) The hike begins at the mouth of Black Star Canyon and follows the canyon bottom through oak, willow, and sycamore groves, passing old ranch sites. En route, the trail climbs the north canyon wall, crossing chaparral-covered slopes to overlooks of the scenic canyon and surrounding mountains." Read more

If you never go outside this could be a good trail for you (easily accesible). If you spend any amount of time hiking you will think it is horrible. Half of the hike is next to a fence that looks like is used to keep prisoners in. Also, Graffiti, litter, wrecked cars.I will never do this hike again.

The trail is primarily maintenance road bordered by Orange County and Irvine Ranch Land. The road is an easement between these parcels. One loses the feel of a hike in the hills and you cannot help but notice the number of "No Trespassing" signs bordering the roadway along with expensive electrified fence along the Irvine Ranch property that also includes surveliance cameras and concertina wire. It is an easy walk / hike but not one I am inclined to repeat.

This is a pretty good hike if you wanna stay local. It's a maintenance road most of the way so that kind of takes a little away from the hike, but the scenery gets pretty cool once you start the climb a couple miles in.
