Mastodon Peak Loop

Mastodon Peak Loop Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This fine short day hike leads past a palm-shaded oasis to the granite-crowned overlook of Mastodon Peak, where broad vistas unfold across the mountains and valleys of southern Joshua Tree National Park. The end of the hike takes you past the historic Mastodon Mine and Winona Mill site. The Mastodon Peak Loop is an excellent choice for hikers who don’t have the time, energy, or inclination to take the longer trail to Lost Palms Oasis. This trip leads you to a commanding vista atop granite-stacked Mastodon Peak. Be sure to bring binoculars; you may spot some of the bighorn sheep that dwell in the Eagle Mountains."

"This short loop hike in the southeastern part of Joshua Tree National Park treats you to an oasis, traces of an ancient Cahuilla Indian village, fun scrambling up the rocky summit of Mastodon Peak, ruins of two old mines, and a signed nature trail, all in less than a league of walking."

"This trail takes you by two historical sites and a lofty overlook of the southern region of the park. Either approach to the trail includes the nature trail. The view of the old gold mill and the mine is in direct contrast with the Indians' use of the riches of the desert; the latter left no ruins or scars on the environment. A loop hike from the Cottonwood Spring Oasis to nearby Mastodon Mine, Winona Mill, and Mastodon Peak."
