Cottonwood Spring Nature Trail

Cottonwood Spring Nature Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The broad clear trail leads up a wash from the road near the spring, eventually winding up to a low ridge leading to the campground. This is one of the most informative nature trails in the park. The signs are legible and placed with the appropriate plant, and highly educational. The information on this nature trail identifies the plants common to this region of the Colorado (Sonoran) Desert. The unique focus of the signs is on the Cahuilla Indians' use of the plants for food, medicine, and household goods. A Cahuilla elder provided the information. The detailed explanations of the processes used by the original inhabitants create genuine admiration for their sophistication. Several of the plants originally developed by the Indians are now grown and marketed commercially, such as creosote tea and jojoba. An easy out-and-back nature trail from a desert spring."
