A short hike leading to splendid alpine scenery is generally a recipe for severe overuse. However, such is not the case with the trail to Robinson Lake. Perhaps the majority of hikers dismiss the area, which lies outside of the John Muir Wilderness, as unworthy, but nothing could be further from the truth; the lake, cradled in a dramatic glacial cirque topped with craggy pinnacles, is quite scenic. Sections of the 1.5-mile climb are steep, but it is short enough for a pleasant hike or overnight backpack.
