Norman Clyde made the first ascent of North Guard by this route in 1925. He described the summit tower as being “a fine rock-climb . . . a granite monolith some twenty feet in height may be the highest point and which, without hand-holds or foot-holds, leans in an embarrassing way over a five-hundred foot precipice.” Even after the long climb, many parties forego the final few feet of the summit pillar due to the wild exposure.
