Tijuana Estuary Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A bird-watcher’s delight, the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve is a biological preserve within the city of Imperial Beach. Flat paths make the reserve a walker’s haven for nearby homeowners and nature lovers, who come for rare glimpses of endangered year-round residents and the migrating shorebirds that winter here."

"The south side of the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve offers more in both hiking trail length and diversity than other parts of the delta. Great views of San Diegos sister city, Tijuana, can be had throughout the hike. This section of the reserve allows bikes but also offers plenty of privacy, as well as a number of benches where you can sit silently with your binoculars and watch the birds and other wildlife emerge." "The isolated, perennially neglected Border Field State Park, accessible via the partially paved and sometimes closed Monument Road, lies at an interesting geographical spot, the extreme southwest corner of the lower 48 states. A picnic area atop a low coastal terrace there offers a superb view of the Coronado Islands, Point Loma, and the downtown San Diego skyline, which is bisected by the Coronado Bridge. Along the border fence, a stone monument dating from 1851 commemorates the first point at which the boundary of the U.S. and Mexico was staked, after the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. South of the border fence, the densely packed playas section of Tijuana stretches for miles, in complete contrast to the open space just north of the border fence." Read more
