San Jacinto Peak from Idyllwild

San Jacinto Peak from Idyllwild Professional Review and Guide

"This trip is our favorite tour of the San Jacinto Wilderness high country. This is a land of superlatives: the most dramatic granite faces, most beautiful conifer forests, and second highest mountains in Southern California. Starting at Humber Park in Idyllwild, it makes a counterclockwise loop by way of Saddle Junction and over the Wellman Divide, then to the very pinnacle of San Jacinto Peak, before descending through Little Round Valley and returning along the PCT. It is a great way to get to know the San Jacinto Peak area. Several beautifully situated trail camps along the route offer tempting backpacking options."

"San Jacinto Peak, at 10,834 feet, is the northern culmination of the Peninsular Ranges that extend all the way from Baja California."

"This trip makes use of the Deer Springs Trail to ascend San Jacinto Peak, then loops around and back through Wellman and Strawberry Cienegas on the return. En route you pass two trail camps—Strawberry Junction, 3.7 miles up the trail where the Paci?c Crest Trail (PCT) meets your route, and Little Round Valley, high on a lodgepole pine–shaded bench under San Jacinto Peak.

There is water at Little Round Valley until late summer. Choose one for your overnight stay; the next day, climb to the summit for a panorama unsurpassed in Southern California, and circle back via the two cienegas."
