Red Tahquitz

Idyllwild, California

Red Tahquitz Professional Review and Guide

"This rewarding trip visits the highlights of the San Jacinto Mountains’ rich forests and verdant meadows, one of the most well-watered and scenic mountain regions of southern California. The high plateau of the San Jacinto Mountains—with its thick forests of pine and fir, numerous lush meadows, springs and perennial streams, and boulder-dotted landscape— closely resembles the Kern Plateau region of the southern Sierra Nevada. This is one of the most scenic regions in southern California’s mountains. Climbers are attracted to the area near the trailhead by many challenging routes up Suicide Rock and Lily Rock (locally known as Tahquitz Rock). Lily Rock offers some of the most difficult and challenging rock climbing in southern California."

One of the best parts of this trial is right at the tail end, where one must beat their own path up to the ridge. As an extra bonus or just for a little extra excitment one can walk the ridgeline between the peaks of Red Tahquitz and Mount Tahquitz. There are some really neat rock formations to be found along this stretch, as well as plenty of changing panoramas to enjoy. Be careful, but have a blast!

Awesome sights, snow on the ground, plenty of clean water, and no mosquitos! Late Winter is a great time to visit Idyllwild.
