Hookton Slough Trail Professional Reviews and Guides

"This short hike is an excursion into a landscape loved by wildlife but rarely visited by humans: the coastal wetland. Birders especially will find plenty to marvel at along this trail, which follows a historic dike out through the marsh along Hookton Slough, itself a branch of Humboldt Bay. More than 200 species of birds, including 4 endangered species, make their home in this refuge for at least part of the year. Migratory birds such as the black brant and marbled godwit are attracted to the extensive eelgrass beds and rich mudflats of Humboldt Bay, while raptors such as the peregrine falcon simply like to chase the other birds. The eelgrass habitat here is some of the best south of Alaska, making the bay a prime stopover along the Pacific Flyway migration route."
