Hiking on this section of the Pacific Crest and the Tahoe Rim trails simplifies your day hike, because the path is well maintained and well signed, and the uphills and downhills are fairly easy. You won’t need extensive navigational skills (although you should always carry a map and compass and know how to use them) to find your way along this trail heading north into the Upper Truckee River drainage. Keep your camera ready because there are plenty of vistas and wildflowers along the way. To protect the meadows, stay put to look at the original cabins on the edge of Meiss Meadow; they’re easily viewed from the trail. This is a great hike for families with children able to handle a light pack. There is little shade for much of this hike, so take plenty of water (or a method to treat it) and wear appropriate sun protection.
