    Elysian Park Loops Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This double loop shows off some of the highlights of the oldest city park in Los Angeles, passing by landmarks little known and seldom visited other than by Echo Park locals (Dodger Stadium is a notable exception, of course).

This park has poor signage and is known to harbor an unsavory element at night, but during the day it’s a wonderful place to get outside."

The trail is located within Elysian Park and is north of Downtown Los Angeles. This trail is ideal for hiking and running and provides a picturesque setting which will make you feel you are miles from civilization. Most of the trail is wide well groomed trail. As you traverse the hillside over looking the Golden State Freeway, the trail becomes a narrow single track. This is my favorite portion of the trail as it hugs the hillside and winds it way through trees and brush. The second part of the widens and is a favorite for local dog walkers. The challenging hills on this trail make it one of my favorite runs. Best time to take this trail is in the morning. Just remember, you are still in the heart of Los Angeles. Always be alert and cautious while using trails in this area. Enjoy!!

Detailed Trail Descriptions from Our Guidebooks

"A mix of paved road and rugged dirt path, this hike through L.A.’s oldest park leads to a blufftop recreation area with sweeping views of Dodger Stadium and the San Gabriel Mountains. The 600-acre Elysian Park, which includes Dodger Stadium and the Los Angeles Police Academy, is the city’s oldest park and second only in size to Griffith Park. Birders also frequent the park; recent sightings include redtailed hawks, Western bluebirds, a black-headed grosbeak, and Lucy’s warbler. On weekends, the park is full of picnicking families, exercise hounds, and nature lovers. If there happens to be a home baseball game, the area is even livelier; just try to plan your visit so it doesn’t coincide with the beginning or end of a game, or you will likely find yourself caught in a massive traffic jam. The first time I hiked Elysian Park, I showed up without a plan, figuring the trail system was small enough to make that unnecessary. In reality, the park has many and varied trails spread over its 600 acres. A couple of trail maps are posted within the park, but it’s hard to get a sense of how long or difficult they are." "Yellow wildflowers and birds dominate this easy loop trail in the spring. It’s a popular jogging path year-round, but it never seems overcrowded. A small secluded garden with a bench can be found at the midway point. The 600-acre Elysian Park is the city’s oldest park and second only in size to Griffith Park. No stranger to controversy, the park saw three of its communities uprooted to make room for Dodger Stadium in 1950, and later it was divided in half by the Pasadena Freeway. Still, it’s a great place for a solitary run or hike, though its lack of good trail maps can be confusing for those unfamiliar with the area. Birders also frequent the park; recent sightings include red-tailed hawks, western bluebirds, a black-headed grosbeak, and Lucy’s warbler. "Elysian Park, close to downtown Los Angeles, is a 575-acre retreat from urban stress. Although the park has been cut by many roads, it’s possible to follow trails that will immerse you in greenery. Although near the central city, Elysian Park is usually uncrowded and has a remote feeling—possibly because access is a bit confusing. The park appears to be everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Motorists see it while motoring along the Golden State and Pasadena Freeways, and pass through it on the way to Dodger Stadium; to commuters and Dodger fans, it’s a familiar sight. But when you explore the park on foot, it somehow seems as if it’s in the middle of nowhere. More than 10 miles of hiking trails and dirt fire roads lead through some surprisingly wild terrain."
