Panoche Valley is a remote part of California that gets little visitation except by birders. The flat basin of Panoche Valley is grazed by cattle, and traffic is just about nil. Most of the land is private property, so you must bird from the roadside, usually with a spotting scope. During winters of heavy rain, some of the roads may become impassable. Specialty birds: Resident—Golden Eagle; Prairie Falcon; Chukar; Greater Roadrunner; Lewis’s and Acorn Woodpeckers; Say’s Phoebe; Yellow-billed Magpie; Oak Titmouse; Rock Wren; Western Bluebird; Phainopepla; Rufous-crowned Sparrow; Western Meadowlark. Winter—Ferruginous Hawk, Mountain Plover, Mountain Bluebird. This eTrail provides detailed information on birding strategies for this specific location, the specialty birds and other key birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, a detailed map, and helpful general information.
