You begin this section at the Seiad Store and post office (1371’ elevation, located 46 miles west of Interstate 5 via Highway 96). Walking west along the highway, you immediately cross Seiad Valley Road, which heads northeast up to Horse Tail Falls and beyond to Cook and Green Pass. Not much farther on you reach School House Gulch (1380–0.5), from where the old PCT route once started. Following the road as it curves west, you quickly reach a newer trailhead for Lower Devils Peak Lookout Trail 12W04 (1380– 0.3). Since it is an exhausting 4400-foot ascent to potential campsites by the Kangaroo Mountain meadows, one is prudent to start this strenuous trek in the cool shade of the morning.
