Point Sal Overlook

Guadalupe, California

Point Sal Overlook Professional Review and Guide

"This hike follows an old road through the rolling Casmalia Hills to several panoramic overlooks. The road, which crosses into Vandenberg Air Force Base, is open only to foot traffic due to unstable soil and washouts. The spectacular views include Point Sal Ridge to Point Sal, the secluded Point Sal Beach at the base of the bluffs, Lion Rock, Point Arguello to the south, and north to Point Buchon at Montaña de Oro State Park."

I recommend this trail for Winter or Spring, as last week the hills were bone dry and dead looking and the heat a pain. If you do go in summer, bring 1 gallon of water per person. My son and I each had half a gallon, and barely make it back OK. We did the entire 12 miles to the beach and back. The beach is the best part, as we were the only people there for the 2 hours we spent there.

From the gate to the beach is exactly 5 miles or 10 out and back. I ride it on my bike a couple of times a month. Good training hill, the climb out from the ocean is brutal. There are washouts so it is important to go slow the first time. The view is wonderful. Trail includes fire road, asphalt and single track due to the overgrowth.
