Empire Mine State Historic Park Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Beneath your feet, 367 miles of carefully constructed tunnels wind through the ore beds of the Empire Mine. Aboveground, Empire Mine State Historic Park maintains a much smaller system of trails that, instead of burrowing through rock, wind through a mature mixed evergreen forest and remnants of California’s gold rush legacy.
To get an idea of the amazing catacomb that exists under your feet when you hike at Empire Mine State Historic Park, the displays in the park’s visitor center are a mustsee, especially the scale model of the mine’s guts, which will blow your mind. The woodland above doesn’t hint at the complex man-made maze below, but knowing that a labyrinth weaves through the depths is a provocative enhancement to a walk in this park."
